Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park

A compact soda lake sanctuary in the heart of the Great Rift Valley — famous for its dramatic flamingo flocks, Kenya's best rhino viewing, and remarkable wildlife diversity packed into just 188 square kilometres.

Overview

Lake Nakuru National Park is one of Kenya's most visited and visually spectacular parks — a compact 188 square kilometre sanctuary built around the alkaline soda lake of Lake Nakuru in the heart of the Great Rift Valley. At its most spectacular, Lake Nakuru was home to millions of lesser flamingos that turned its shores an extraordinary shade of pink — one of the most famous wildlife images in the world. Flamingo concentrations fluctuate as the birds periodically shift to other Rift Valley lakes, but even when flamingo numbers are reduced, Lake Nakuru remains an outstanding wildlife destination. It is now Kenya's best park for rhino viewing, with both black and white rhinos protected within a 74km electric security fence — one of the highest rhino densities in Africa. Beyond rhinos and flamingos, Lake Nakuru supports remarkably diverse wildlife for its size. Euphorbia-studded escarpment and forested ridges shelter leopard, lion, hyena, waterbuck, buffalo and Rothschild's giraffe. The lake draws pelicans, cormorants and an extraordinary diversity of waterbirds. Nakuru is easily combined with Kenya's other Rift Valley attractions — Lake Bogoria, Lake Elementaita and Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Rhino Tracking

Rhino Tracking

Focus a dedicated game drive on tracking Nakuru's black and white rhino populations — one of Kenya's best rhino viewing opportunities. The park's electric security fence has created one of the highest rhino densities in Africa, and sightings are excellent year-round.

Baboon Cliff & Rothschild's Giraffe

Practical Information & Travel Tips

Park Fees
Approximately USD 60 per day per person for non-residents. Half-day rates may be available.
Security Fence
Nakuru is entirely enclosed by an electric fence, which has successfully eliminated poaching but also means some wildlife movement between parks is restricted.
Timing
Morning and late afternoon game drives offer the best wildlife activity. Midday visits are less rewarding.
Combine with Naivasha
Lake Naivasha is just 60km from Nakuru, making a two-lake Rift Valley circuit easily achievable in a day.

Flamingo numbers at Lake Nakuru fluctuate significantly based on water levels and algae growth cycles. In some years the lake hosts millions; in others, most flamingos shift to Lake Bogoria or Lake Magadi.
