Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve

Kenya's remote northern frontier — home to the Samburu Special Five (Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich) found nowhere else in the region, in a dramatic landscape defined by the Ewaso Ng'iro River.

Overview

Samburu National Reserve is one of Kenya's most compelling wildlife destinations — a remote, dramatic wilderness in the arid north where the Ewaso Ng'iro River cuts through a landscape of doum palms, acacia scrub and dramatic rocky escarpments to create an unexpected oasis of extraordinary biodiversity. What makes Samburu genuinely unique in East Africa is its collection of five wildlife species found nowhere else in the region — collectively known as the Samburu Special Five: the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, beisa oryx and gerenuk. These northern dry-country specialists occur only in Kenya's arid northern frontier, making Samburu an essential destination for any serious wildlife enthusiast. The Ewaso Ng'iro River is Samburu's lifeblood — a permanent waterway attracting enormous concentrations of wildlife in an otherwise stark landscape. Game drives along the river reveal elephant drinking in the morning light, crocodile basking on the banks, leopard resting in the riverside trees, and a constant parade of dry-country specialists. The river is also the cultural heartland of the Samburu people — a Nilo-Cushitic community closely related to the Maasai, whose distinctive beaded jewellery, warrior traditions and semi-nomadic cattle culture add rich dimensions to the wilderness experience.

Samburu Special Five Game Drive

Samburu Special Five Game Drive

Ewaso Ng'iro River Drive

Ewaso Ng'iro River Drive

Follow the river's course as elephants drink at dawn, crocodiles bask on the banks and leopard rest in the doum palm and acacia trees. The Ewaso Ng'iro is the lifeblood of the reserve — a constant theatre of wildlife in one of East Africa's most photogenic riverside habitats.

Leopard Tracking

Leopard Tracking

Samburu has one of the highest leopard sighting rates in Kenya. Leopards are regularly seen resting in the riverside acacia and doum palm trees along the Ewaso Ng'iro — making sightings far more predictable than in most other Kenyan parks. Samburu's guides are expert trackers.

Buffalo Springs Game Drive

Frequently Asked Questions

The Samburu Special Five are five wildlife species found only in Kenya's arid northern frontier: the reticulated giraffe (bold patterning), Grevy's zebra (narrowly striped, endangered), Somali ostrich (blue-necked), beisa oryx (scimitar-horned antelope) and gerenuk (long-necked antelope that stands on hind legs to browse). None occur in Kenya's southern parks.
