Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

An ancient, collapsed caldera sheltering the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa — the world's largest intact volcanic crater and home to all of the Big Five in a single enclosed ecosystem.

Overview

Ngorongoro Crater is a natural wonder — the intact floor of an ancient volcano estimated to have once stood higher than Kilimanjaro before it collapsed in on itself some 2–3 million years ago, leaving a caldera 600 metres deep that shelters a permanently enclosed ecosystem of extraordinary density. Tens of thousands of wildebeest live on the crater floor alongside dense populations of lion, elephant and hippo, drinking from freshwater springs and the alkaline Lake Magadi at its centre, and including a population of approximately 20–30 black rhino — one of the densest black rhino populations in East Africa. The crater also holds one of Africa's highest lion densities; the resident prides form a self-contained population, separate from the lions living on the forested rim above. The drive down from the rim at dawn, with the mist clearing to reveal the plains below, is one of the defining moments of an African safari. Ngorongoro pairs beautifully with the Serengeti as part of our northern Tanzania circuit.

Black Rhino on the Crater Floor

Black Rhino on the Crater Floor

One of the last strongholds for critically endangered black rhino in East Africa — a population of approximately 20–30 individuals roams the crater floor, with sightings regular in the fever-tree forest area and the crater lake margins.

Fever-Tree Forest & Flamingo Lake

Fever-Tree Forest & Flamingo Lake

The crater floor's fever-tree forest shelters elephant and leopard; the alkaline Lake Magadi at its centre draws thousands of flamingos and is a prime staging ground for the predator–prey dramas that play out here daily.

Crater Lion Prides

Crater Lion Prides

The crater is home to one of Africa's highest lion densities — a self-contained population, separate from the lions living on the forested rim above, with prides of up to 20 individuals often seen resting together on the open grassland in superb light.

Practical Information & Travel Tips

Crater Descent Fee
A separate crater service fee applies — approximately USD 295 per vehicle per day — in addition to standard conservation area fees. This is non-negotiable and significant, so factor it into your budget.
Vehicle Numbers
Vehicles inside the crater are limited to control congestion. Arrive early at the descent gate to secure access, especially in peak season.
Crater Exit Time
Overnight stays on the crater floor are not permitted — all vehicles must exit by 6:00pm. Only day visits are allowed below the rim.
Malaria
A lower risk than the lowland parks thanks to the altitude, but prophylaxis is still recommended.
Warm Layers
The crater rim sits at roughly 2,300m and nights can be cold. Pack warm layers for early-morning drives.
