Still Wild Safaris
Entebbe

Entebbe

Uganda's serene lakeside gateway on the shores of Lake Victoria home to the international airport, a wildlife education centre, and Ngamba Island's rescued chimpanzees, this is where almost every Uganda safari quietly begins and ends.

Overview

Entebbe is Uganda's international gateway to the world a charming, leafy lakeside town of approximately 70,000 people spread across a green peninsula jutting into the vast expanse of Lake Victoria, the world's second-largest freshwater lake. Home to Uganda's only international airport, Entebbe has a pleasantly unhurried atmosphere compared to the bustle of Kampala 40km to the north, and offers visitors a graceful, colonial-era setting of wide avenues, magnificent trees, and beautiful lakeshore gardens. Most international visitors to Uganda spend at least one night in Entebbe either on arrival before heading into the national parks, or on departure after completing their safari. However, Entebbe is far more than simply a transit point. The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, beautiful botanical gardens, and the tranquil shores of Lake Victoria all make Entebbe a destination worth exploring properly. Entebbe enjoys a pleasant, lake-moderated climate year-round, with temperatures averaging a comfortable 22–27°C thanks to the cooling effect of Lake Victoria. The two dry seasons June to September and December to February are the most pleasant for outdoor activities and boat trips to Ngamba Island, while the rainy seasons (March to May and October to November) bring afternoon showers but leave the town easily navigable. For those who prefer a quieter base than Kampala, Entebbe's lakeshore hotels offer an idyllic pre- or post-safari staging point.
