Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park

The primate capital of the world 13 species in a single park, including over 1,500 chimpanzees in some of the most accessible and best-studied communities in Africa. Kibale is Uganda's premier chimpanzee trekking destination.

Overview

Kibale National Park holds a title that is superlative yet entirely accurate: the primate capital of the world. This magnificent tropical rainforest park in western Uganda covers 795 square kilometres of ancient montane and lowland forest that is home to 13 species of primates the highest primate diversity of any protected area in East Africa. At the centre of this primate world are the chimpanzees: over 1,500 individuals estimated to live within Kibale's boundaries, the highest density of any national park in Uganda and one of the highest anywhere on earth. Multiple chimpanzee communities in the Kanyanchu area have been habituated to human presence through years of patient scientific research, and twice-daily guided trekking sessions allow visitors to observe these remarkable animals in their natural forest environment. Beyond the chimpanzees, Kibale's canopy resonates with red colobus monkeys in troops of up to 500 one of East Africa's most spectacular primate sights alongside grey-cheeked mangabeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, olive baboons, and eight other primate species. The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-managed area on the park's boundary, offers superb birdwatching with over 200 species and all revenue benefiting local communities. Kibale is also one of Uganda's finest birding destinations with over 375 species including 35 Albertine Rift endemics.
