Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda's largest national park — where the entire volume of the Victoria Nile is forced through a 7-metre gorge in the world's most powerful waterfall, then fans into a wildlife-rich delta on Lake Albert. Lions, Rothschild's giraffes, elephants, and shoebill storks across 3,840 km².

Overview

Murchison Falls National Park stands as Uganda's largest and most magnificent national park, encompassing 3,840 square kilometres of diverse wilderness in the northwestern corner of the country. The park takes its name from the extraordinary Murchison Falls — where the entire volume of the Victoria Nile is forced through a rocky gorge barely 7 metres wide before plunging 45 metres in a thundering curtain of white water, recognised as one of the world's most powerful waterfalls. The sheer power of the falls has awed every visitor since Sir Samuel Baker became the first European to see them in 1864, naming them after Sir Roderick Murchison, President of the Royal Geographical Society. Above the falls, vast savannahs host Rothschild's giraffes, elephants, Cape buffalos, lions, and leopards. Below the falls, the legendary Nile boat cruise brings visitors within metres of massive hippo pods, enormous Nile crocodiles, and forest elephants drinking at the river's edge. For sport fishing enthusiasts, the Victoria Nile is one of the world's greatest Nile Perch fisheries, while the adjacent Budongo Forest Reserve hosts the largest known chimpanzee population in Uganda.

Murchison Falls Nile Boat Cruise

Murchison Falls Nile Boat Cruise

The iconic 3-hour launch trip from Paraa upstream to the base of the falls is one of East Africa's great safari experiences. Drift past enormous hippo pods (hundreds at a time), Nile crocodiles reaching 5 metres in length, forest elephants drinking on the banks, and over 100 bird species. The approach to the base of Murchison Falls, where the Nile thunders through its 7-metre gorge in a cloud of spray, is one of the most dramatic moments in African safari.

Rothschild's Giraffe & North Bank Game Drives

Rothschild's Giraffe & North Bank Game Drives

The savannah north of the Victoria Nile hosts outstanding game viewing. Lions in family prides, Rothschild's giraffes, African elephants, Cape buffalos, Uganda kobs, oribi, and Jackson's hartebeests are regularly seen on morning and afternoon drives. The Buligi Circuit is particularly productive for large predators and giraffe.

Nile Delta Shoebill Boat Trip

Nile Delta Shoebill Boat Trip

A specialist boat safari downstream from Paraa toward the point where the Victoria Nile meets Lake Albert. Exceptionally rich in waterbirds including the prehistoric shoebill stork — one of Africa's most sought-after bird sightings — plus African skimmers, various kingfisher species, herons, and waders in the papyrus delta.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Rhino Tracking

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Rhino Tracking

Located 3 hours from Kampala on the drive to Murchison, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is home to Uganda's only wild rhinos — approximately 36 individuals in one of Africa's most impressive conservation success stories. Track the southern white rhinos on foot with armed rangers, approaching to within a safe distance of these magnificent animals. A worthwhile half-day stop en route to or from the park.

Getting There

By air (recommended for time-efficiency): fly from Entebbe International Airport to Pakuba or Chobe Airstrip (approximately 90 minutes by charter), with lodge transfers arranged by your accommodation. By road from Kampala: approximately 305km, 4–5 hours via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Masindi town on fully paved roads. A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended within the park, especially in the wet season. To access the North Bank and its best game viewing, vehicles cross the Victoria Nile by ferry at Paraa — a memorable part of the Murchison experience that runs throughout the day.
