Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda's largest national park where the entire volume of the Victoria Nile is forced through a 7-metre gorge in the world's most powerful waterfall, then fans into a wildlife-rich delta on Lake Albert. Lions, Rothschild's giraffes, elephants, and shoebill storks across 3,840 km².

Overview

Murchison Falls National Park stands as Uganda's largest and most magnificent national park, encompassing 3,840 square kilometres of diverse wilderness in the northwestern corner of the country. The park takes its name from the extraordinary Murchison Falls where the entire volume of the Victoria Nile is forced through a rocky gorge barely 7 metres wide before plunging 45 metres in a thundering curtain of white water, recognised as one of the world's most powerful waterfalls. The sheer power of the falls has awed every visitor since Sir Samuel Baker became the first European to see them in 1864, naming them after Sir Roderick Murchison, President of the Royal Geographical Society. Above the falls, vast savannahs host Rothschild's giraffes, elephants, Cape buffalos, lions, and leopards. Below the falls, the legendary Nile boat cruise brings visitors within metres of massive hippo pods, enormous Nile crocodiles, and forest elephants drinking at the river's edge. For sport fishing enthusiasts, the Victoria Nile is one of the world's greatest Nile Perch fisheries, while the adjacent Budongo Forest Reserve hosts the largest known chimpanzee population in Uganda.
