Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park

Uganda's most underrated national park — ancient Congo Basin rainforest, boiling Sempaya Hot Springs, and 441 bird species including 40 Congo Basin endemics found nowhere else in East Africa. The most important forest birding destination in Uganda.

Overview

Semuliki National Park is Uganda's most underrated and most rewarding national park for birders and wilderness seekers. The park protects 220 square kilometres of lowland tropical rainforest that forms an eastern extension of the vast Congo Basin forest — one of the world's great forest ecosystems and the second-largest tropical rainforest on earth. This Congo connection is what makes Semuliki so special: the park harbours wildlife assemblages and bird species with strong central African affinities, many found nowhere else in East Africa. Of Semuliki's 441 recorded bird species, approximately 40 are Congo Basin endemics — species whose East African populations exist only in this small park, making it the most important forest birding destination in Uganda and one of the best in the African Great Lakes region. Beyond the extraordinary birdlife, Semuliki is famous for the Sempaya Hot Springs — two spectacular boiling geysers in the heart of the forest, one of which can project water and steam up to 2 metres into the air. The park is also home to chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, De Brazza's monkeys, and forest elephants, and borders the territory of the Batwa pygmy people, who have historical connections to the Semuliki forest.

Key Attractions

Congo Basin Birding — 40 Endemics

Congo Basin Birding — 40 Endemics

Semuliki has 441 bird species including approximately 40 Congo Basin endemics found in Uganda ONLY in this park — entirely absent from Bwindi, Kibale, and other Uganda parks. Priority targets include the Yellow-throated Nicator, African Piculet, Chocolate-backed Kingfisher, Black Dwarf Hornbill, Lemon-bellied Crombec, and the spectacular African Broadbill. Early morning guided walks with specialist birding guides are essential.

Sempaya Hot Springs

Sempaya Hot Springs

The park's most visited attraction — two spectacular thermal features in the heart of ancient forest. The female Sempaya Spring (Nyasimbi) maintains a large circular pool at near 100 degrees Celsius surrounded by colourful mineral terraces and steam. The male spring (Bitente) periodically erupts as a geyser. Local communities attribute deep spiritual significance to both springs. The forest walk to the springs is rewarding in itself.

Primate Tracking in Congo Forest

Primate Tracking in Congo Forest

Semuliki's forests support chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, De Brazza's monkeys, olive baboons, and black-and-white colobus in entirely undisturbed forest conditions. Guided forest walks allow encounters with these primates in some of the most pristine and least-visited rainforest in East Africa.

Getting There

By road from Fort Portal: 1.5 hours via the spectacular escarpment road through Bundibugyo. Fort Portal is 5 hours from Kampala by road (A109 highway) or approximately 1 hour by domestic flight from Entebbe to Kasese Airstrip. There is no airstrip in Semuliki itself, and a 4WD vehicle is recommended for the approach road, especially in the wet season.
