Beginning with an airport pickup at Kigali International Airport and an overnight in Kigali, this extraordinary 5-day safari combines two of Uganda's rarest primate encounters golden monkey trekking and mountain gorilla trekking in a single seamless journey. After your Kigali night, the overland crossing takes you first into Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where the vivid golden monkey inhabits the bamboo forests of the Virunga volcanoes, before moving to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for your encounter with the mountain gorillas. Only a few hundred golden monkeys remain in the wild, making this one of Africa's rarest wildlife encounters. Everything you need to know before your safari begins answered by our team of specialists.
Only a few hundred golden monkeys survive in the wild, all in the Virunga volcanic range. Their vivid orange-gold colouring is unlike any other primate, and trekking them in Mgahinga's bamboo forests is one of Uganda's most unique wildlife experiences.
No each trek is a separate full-day permitted activity in a different national park. This itinerary is specifically designed to allocate one day to each, with a lodge transfer in between.
Both are available year-round. The dry seasons June to August and December to February offer the most comfortable trekking conditions.
Both treks involve hiking through forested, hilly terrain. A reasonable fitness level is recommended. Treks can last 2–6 hours. Porters are available at both park gates.
Yes golden monkey trekking requires its own Uganda Wildlife Authority permit, which is included in this package.
