RWANDA
Rwanda is the only country on earth where you can see the Big Five on savannah plains, trek chimpanzees through ancient rainforest, unwind on the shores of a Great Lake, and stand an arm's length from mountain gorillas all within a single week, on excellent roads, in a country small enough that every transfer is scenic rather than exhausting. This grand circuit is the most complete Rwanda itinerary: game drives and a boat safari in Akagera, chimpanzee trekking and the canopy walkway in Nyungwe, a restorative interlude on Lake Kivu, and the crowning encounter one full hour with a mountain gorilla family in Volcanoes National Park. Before You Go
Everything you need to know before your safari begins answered by our team of specialists.
Yes, and comfortably it is Rwanda's size that makes it possible. No transfer exceeds the Akagera-to-Nyungwe leg on Day 3, and even that is scenic the whole way. Four ecosystems, two treks, one boat safari, in seven days.
Four are very realistic lion, elephant, buffalo and both black and white rhino, reintroduced and now well established. Leopard is present but genuinely elusive. Akagera's recovery over the past decade has been one of Africa's great conservation successes.
Nyungwe's chimpanzees are wild and wide-ranging, and success rates are good but not guaranteed typically higher in the dry season. The forest itself, and the canopy walkway, make the day worthwhile regardless.
The gorilla permit is $1,500 and the chimpanzee permit $100 per person, both included and both issued by the Rwanda Development Board.
It is the one substantial transfer from six to seven hours across the country. We break it properly, and the scenery through the tea country and the thousand hills is genuinely part of the experience rather than a cost of it. A domestic flight can replace it on request.
Most nationalities obtain a visa on arrival, and the East Africa Tourist Visa is accepted. A Yellow Fever certificate may be required depending on your travel history.
