Rhythm & Roots is built on a simple premise: the best creative work comes from genuine encounter with people, places, traditions and sounds you could not have imagined before you arrived. It is designed for musicians, writers, spoken-word artists and performers, and every location on the route was chosen for a specific contribution to the sonic and narrative imagination. The journey runs from Kampala's live music scene east to the source of the Nile at Jinja, north to the roar of Murchison Falls, west to the Toro royal court at Fort Portal where the praise-singing tradition is still alive, and finally into Bwindi for Batwa storytelling and one hour with a mountain gorilla family. It closes in silence at Lake Bunyonyi. A professional creative guide travels with the group for all nine days. Each day carries a writing or music prompt offered as an invitation, never as homework.
The Experience

The drive is the first briefing matatu sound systems, market noise, the call of hawkers, the particular density of a city that is never quiet. Welcome dinner and orientation with your creative guide. Before You Go
Everything you need to know before your safari begins answered by our team of specialists.
Not at all. The programme is designed around serious intent rather than professional credentials. The only requirement is that you arrive ready to work.
Four to eight participants. The listening sessions and sharing circles do not work above that number.
Instruments are not provided, but the programme works with anything portable. Traditional percussion is supplied during the music sessions. A number of past participants have found that arriving without their primary instrument was creatively liberating make of that what you will.
Most of it, yes and recording is actively encouraged. The exceptions are inside the gorilla trek, where rangers set the terms, and during Batwa sessions, where we ask permission on your behalf first and it is occasionally declined.
Fort Portal to Bwindi is six to seven hours by road along the Rwenzori foothills. It is the one genuinely long transfer in the journey, and we leave early and break it properly. If you would prefer to avoid it, we can restructure the route through Queen Elizabeth with an extra night quoted on request.
Treks cross steep, uneven forest terrain and run from thirty minutes to six hours. A moderate level of fitness is required. Porters are available at the trailhead for a small fee and are strongly recommended.
June to September and December to February offer the easiest conditions. The wet season brings extraordinary acoustic environments rain on a forest canopy is its own instrument at the cost of harder terrain.
Most nationalities require a Uganda tourist visa, obtained in advance through the Uganda e-Visa portal. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry.
